ARIZONA REVIEWS PRAISE "EXQUISITE LYRIC TENOR"

Green Valley News and Sun – Review Lucia di Lammermoor
Sunday 14 October 2007
Opera Preview: Arizona Opera season off to strong start with 'Lucia'
By Dr. Donald J. Behnke
“…Especially interesting in this season opener was the singing of Mark T. Panuccio in the role of Edgardo. Panuccio brought to the role a truly fine Italian tenor voice with great range and dramatic color. He clearly had been cast by general and Artistic Director Joel Revzen to blend beautifully with the soprano for one of the significant elements of this opera, ensemble singing. Panuccio created a strong, masculine Scottish character which contrasted painfully well against the foppishly French portrayal of Arturo by Jason Ferrante.Panuccio’s death scene was a killer for the character and for the audience. As we know, when someone is stabbed in an opera, it is not blood that comes out. It is song. The spirit of Lucia appeared as if to lead her lover to reconciliation in heaven. It was their only way.”

Review: 'Lucia di Lammermoor'

Arizona Daily Star

“…Whalen shared the stage with a superb cast of singers that included the commanding baritone Weston Hurt in the role of Enrico and tenor Mark T. Panuccio making his Arizona Opera debut in the role of Edgardo.
Panuccio is blessed with an exquisite lyric tenor and dramatic sensibilities that were perhaps at their best in his death scene. This hopefully is not the last we see of him on an Arizona stage.”

Press Release From Arizona Opera

TUCSON (September 17, 2007) – Arizona Opera opens its 37th season on Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. with Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic Lucia di Lammermoor. The production stars sopranos Tracy Dahl and Laura Whalen who alternate the title role of the doomed “Lucia.” Dahl, a noted exponent of the title role, which is widely regarded as one of the most challenging in the entire soprano repertoire, was last seen in another bel-canto opera by Donizetti, the 2003-2004 production of Don Pasquale. Ms. Whalen is making her Arizona Opera debut. Mark Panuccio and Robert Breault alternate in the role of Lucia’s ill fated lover, “Edgardo.” Breault returns to Arizona Opera after his critically hailed performance as “Sam Polk” in last season’s production of Susannah and up and coming, Panuccio makes his Arizona Opera debut.

Cincinnati Pops Salutes Cincinnati Opera

Mark received wonderful reviews on his performance with the Cincinnati Pops Sunday, July 15, the day after closing Nixon in China.

The following is an excerpt from Janelle Gelfand's July 18th Classical Music Blog.... in her blog she describes Mark as ".... a rising star with a knockout voice,"

".....Then we came to La Boheme, with Mark Panuccio and Lisa Daltirus. His "Che gelida manina" was simply stunning. He displayed a bright Italianate tenor with the thrilling timbre of a young Pavarotti, and nuanced phrasing. (What a switch from the John Adams he sang last week!! This is his music.)"

Fanucci Bob and Suzanne Hasl and Gene and Ellen Saenger attended the concert and echoed the praise for Mark's performance.

NIXON A HIT!

The first night audience responded positively to the premiere of Nixon in China. Music Hall buzzed with excitement and energy throughout the evening. The first published review echoed the concensus of opinion from the audience.....beautiful music, world class singing and virtuoso conducting.
From the Cincinnati Enquirer, "...Mark Panuccio depicted the aged, infirm Mao as a leader who was still very much in control, even once spitting at Nixon. Panuccio’s clear, ringing tenor navigated the role’s wide leaps and high range effortlessly." Read the entire review at http://www.news.enquirer.com/

The evening (morning) celebrations ended with the induction of new Fanucci from Orlando who are taking the word to Florida, Philadelphia and the Jersey coast.
